Best books by genre

The back cover tries to bring this book closer to fans of Kate Morton, Lucinda Riley and the Downton Abbey series. If I give you my personal opinion, if you are looking for something similar to the Kate Morton novels, look for another book because you are not going to find it here. They are nothing alike. About Lucinda Riley I can’t give my opinion but from what I’ve read I wouldn’t say that neither. Now, if what you like is a series like Downton Abbey, or the much older Upstairs and Downstairs, then you have found your book. What’s more, the author of La villa de las telas is an obvious follower of DA because it’s all very inspired by many of the plots and subplots of this British series (we’ll leave it at that, inspired xD). Moreover, based on that inspiration, I would dare to anticipate some of the things that will happen in the second novel, already in the First World War (and that I keep quiet, of course).
In fact, this reading has been in many ways like watching the first season of a British period series like DA itself (it seems to be written to be adapted for television… in time). In that first season we would see the introduction of the characters, a background plot that would drag on throughout the season and would be resolved at the end, and then we would have many subplots up and down the house that would emerge throughout the chapters and as they arise, whether it takes more or less time, they are resolved. Well, that is the structure of the book, no more and no less: the main plot, the one that extends throughout the book, is that of Marie and the past that connects her with the Melzer family, and then we have many subplots starring both the three children of the Melzer couple and the servants, and that are the salseo of the story.

Las telas en español

Augsburgo, 1913.

What book i read

I have come across a story about how a lonely, quiet, strong and determined girl, arrives at the Villa to work as a cook’s assistant thus starting her life, although without many prospects. Logically she has a past, but it’s more a set of simple memories that won’t make sense until we discover more about everything. It is a quiet read, sometimes too much, but agile, easy and little narrative, which facilitates fluidity and continuity. The most appealing thing is the story itself, along with the place and time in which it is set (1913 in Augsburg), with a very English-style life in Germany.
I liked it, I can’t say otherwise, although I lacked a little more intensity both with the characters and with the love story that marks part of the central axis of the plot. It is true that the author achieves a novel that you read calmly, very well set, with the world above and the world below in a big house before the great social change brought about by the First World War, which begins to be noticed.
